Become a Great Science Communicator

The Challenge

The Science Communications Course addresses the challenges you may face as a scientist or researcher:

  • Misrepresentation of your data or research. Have you ever had your research findings misinterpreted by non-scientists? How do you ensure your work is accurately understood by a broader audience? This course equips you with essential skills to communicate complex scientific concepts to people with different expertise.
  • Lack of formal training: Do you find it challenging to explain your research without relying on technical language or jargon? How do you make complex concepts more accessible to people outside your area of expertise? This course will give your evidence-based frameworks to develop messages that resonate with the communities you’re trying to reach.
  • Incorrect stories in the media: Have you experienced the media misrepresenting or oversimplifying your research? How do you handle such situations? This course covers crucial topics such as crafting compelling narratives, data visualization, public speaking, and media engagement, which are essential for effective science communications.  
  • Audience mistrust and misinformation: Have you encountered mistrust or skepticism from the public when communicating your research? You’ll learn skills to approach public mistrust in science or institutions which can be fueled by misinformation. 
  • Finding stories to share: Do you find it difficult to identify compelling stories within your research to engage audiences? How do you decide which stories to tell and how to make them relatable? The course will give you tools to identify and share relatable stories that 
  • Professional Development: The course provides tangible professional benefits, as you start applying what you learn in this class to writing stronger grant proposals, presenting your research findings, and engaging with media and policymakers.
